Cloud Computing
Most of you
have probably heard of the term "cloud computing" enough to make your
heads spin, but may not know what it is, or where it is going. In
short, the "cloud" is the internet. An easy definition would be
“services and applications that are hosted on and accessed
through the Internet". What this does is remove our need for servers at
our physical locations. Someone else would be responsible for the PCs,
while you have the ownership of programs and/or data on those machines.
Examples of cloud computing that have been around for a while
would be:
Hotmail
Yahoo Mail
Google Mail
In the future, we can expect applications to be hosted on
cloud machines as well. Companies like Microsoft are creating cloud
versions of the entire Office Suite so that all you need is Internet
connectivity to be able to access your programs and data.
Some of the benefits of this technology are:
- Reduced Cost
Cloud technology is
paid incrementally, saving organizations money.
- Increased Storage
Organizations can
store more data than on private computer systems.
- Highly Automated
No longer do IT
personnel need to worry about keeping software up to date.
- More Mobility
Employees can access
information wherever they are, rather than having to remain at their
desks.
Drawbacks:
- YOU MUST BE ON THE INTERNET!!
- Uncontrollable Outages
- Data Congestion
